Stressful traffic may also lead to jaw clenching and shallow breathing.

Driving-related headaches may be connected to tension in:

  • The muscles beneath the skull
  • The upper shoulders
  • The cervical spine
  • The jaw and facial muscles
  • The upper back

To reduce strain while driving:

  • Sit fully against the seat.

Neck movement testing

The provider may assess your ability to turn, bend, and extend the neck comfortably.

Muscle and soft-tissue assessment

The neck, shoulders, jaw, upper back, and base of the skull may be checked for tightness and tenderness.

Neurological screening

Strength, sensation, reflexes, balance, and other neurological functions may be evaluated when appropriate.

Jaw assessment

Jaw movement, clicking, clenching, tenderness, and symptom reproduction may also be considered.

Imaging or referral may be recommended when symptoms, medical history, or examination findings suggest it is necessary.

How May Mechanical Headaches Be Treated?

Treatment depends on the suspected source of the symptoms. No single therapy is appropriate for every headache.

When a headache has a mechanical component, care may focus on improving mobility, decreasing muscle tension, reducing irritation, and supporting better daily function.

Chiropractic care and cervical mobility

Care directed toward the joints and movement of the cervical and upper thoracic spine may be considered when restricted mobility or mechanical dysfunction is identified.

Soft-tissue care

Soft-tissue therapy may address tight muscles around the neck, shoulders, upper back, jaw, temples, and base of the skull.
